Barbara FERRUCCI graduated in Nuclear Engineering in Bologna, Italy. During her Ph.D., she investigated the radiological impact of accidental release scenarios involving storage facilities of radioactive waste, integrating environmental models and geographical Information Systems. Since 2012, she has been a researcher at the ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy, and Sustainable Development) Research Center in Bologna. Currently, she is involved in two main international projects: INNUMAT, addressing research on new structural materials for Gen-IV reactors, and ENEN2plus for education and training actions in the nuclear field. As part of the ENEN2plus project, she has organized the Winter School on Nuclear Waste Safety and Management, which will be held on March 4-8, 2024, in Bologna, Italy.
David HARBOTTLE is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Leeds, UK. Trained as a chemical engineer he has developed his research in the area of colloids and surface science, applying his technical expertise to work on a range of nuclear related activities including waste management, decommissioning and decontamination. He is a member of the Nuclear Academic and Industry Liaison Sub-committee (NAILS) to promote the exchange of knowledge between industry and academia, and sits as a member of the Particles with Fluids Sellafield Ltd. Centre of Expertise, providing technical expertise and knowledge to support decommissioning activities on the Sellafield site. He is the program lead for the undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Leeds and is involved in UK-wide networks supporting the modernization of undergraduate engineering curricula.
Gillian POWER graduated with a primary degree in Engineering from University College, Dublin in 2001. She went on to be awarded a Masters degree, in Physical Sciences in Medicine from Trinity College, Dublin in 2004. Since 2005 she has been a Senior Physicist, for the Irish National Screening programme and was a key member of the team that made BreastCheck the first fully digital national screening programme. In more recent years she has been instrumental as an MPE, in introducing tomosynthesis imaging to the BreastCheck arsenal and looks forward to helping bring Contrast Enhanced imaging to the imaging suite this year. She is currently honorary secretary of the Irish Association of Physicists in Medicine, one of two Irish representatives on the IOMP and she sits on the EFOMP Projects Committee.
Stellan HOLGERSSON graduated in Nuclear Chemistry at Chalmers University, Gothenburg, Sweden in 2001.His Thesis is concerned about the use of cement and concrete for incapsulating radioactive waste. He made a post doc at Forschungszentrum Juelich, Germany in 2002-2003, investigating the properties of graphite from Pebble Bed Reactors for radioactive waste containment. He returned to Sweden to become Senior Researcher at Department of Chemical Engineering at Chalmers in 2005, where he has been working since then. The focus of his research is about radionuclide sorption and diffusion properties of the granitic bedrock in the far-field of a geological disposal of radioactive waste. Another area for his research is investigations on the possibility of the recycling of materials from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), batteries and solar cells. Stellan have also cooperated with other research groups on various topics in biochemistry and radiotherapy medicine, where he has assisted with ICP-MS analyses.
